The Ruby Dragon
The Legend of a Myth
The myth of the Ruby Dragon shares much with our legends of Excalibur and the Holy Grail. All of these legends are crouched in historical events that seem to have occurred, though perhaps not exactly as the current versions of the stories are told. The common consensus is that Kelindor did exist and that a ‘Ruby Dragon’ helped him build an Empire. After these concessions, little else is known for certain. Most believe the Ruby Dragon to be a traditional western dragon (wings and fire) who served as an advisor to Kelindor. Some believe that the Ruby Dragon is a being of pure arcane energy, who is capable of redefining the universe to the will of its owner (this theory is based on the often repeated ability of the Ruby Dragon to defeat the Dark One for all time). Unfortunately, this collective interest in the Ruby Dragon has translated to stories of the Ruby Dragon as a messenger of the Kreator (appearing as a translucent visitation to various individuals), an unseen advisor to the great leaders of history, and even stories of an elderly individual who appears to save someone and then impossibly disappear.
With all of these stories and the proposed powers of the Ruby Dragon, it would be naïve to suppose that no one would be drawn to locating the power for themselves. Thousands, if not millions, of people have left their homes seeking the Ruby Dragon. After nearly three thousand years, none have successfully claimed to have located the Ruby Dragon. Historically, a few have made the claim to have found the Ruby Dragon; however, these claims are quickly disproven. Either the proposed location turns out to be incorrect OR the proposed Ruby Dragon is discovered to be a statue of glass (these statues have varied in size from a couple meters to over eight meters long!). These fruitless efforts have coined a phrase, “Chasing the Ruby Dragon.” This phrase is used in much the same way as we use, “A wild goose chase.”
What is interesting to note, is that with all the interest in finding the Ruby Dragon, few pay attention to the historical responsibilities of the finders. Whether you examine the context of the previous appearance of the Ruby Dragon or the prophecies of Jyneri, the Ruby Dragon’s appearance is closely tied to the Dark One. If even a portion of these texts are to be believed, then whoever does find the Ruby Dragon will gain immense power and the responsibility of defeating the Dark One, again. This easily begs the question: When is the price of power too high?
